Corporate history

Professional imaging products

In 1847 Theodor Teichgräber, an entrepreneur from Berlin, incorporated photographic chemicals for developing collodion plates into the pharmaceutical range of his wholesale pharmacy business. This was the birth of Tetenal.

In 1910 the TETENAL trademark was registered for a concentrated developer solution and the name was later adopted for the whole company along with its entire product range.

In 1925 Tetenal positioned itself in the emerging medical radiology market by offering X-ray chemicals.

In 1962 Tetenal brought its first PrePress product to market. Alongside photography and medical imaging the company thereby established its third field of business.

Innovations with an ecological claim

In 1982 Tetenal launches the first PE-coated b/w photographic paper under the name “TT-Speed”.

In 1987 Tetenal simplifies the development of slide film with its E-6 3-bath technology, which still remains an absolutely leading-edge product in today’s professional colour darkrooms.

In 1992 several products with improved occupational safety and environmental compatibility are launched as part of Tetenal's safe chem research programme. Examples include formaldehyde-free stabilising baths for use in the finishing, minilab and professional laboratory sector, together with minilab processes (C 41 SLR, RA-4 CD SLR) with the lowest replenishment rates. In 1998 the user-friendly minilab range Ergoline and the professional Colortec product line, with odourless and reduced allergy formulae, are added to the range.

In 1993 Tetenal sets new ecological standards: As the first manufacturer in Germany, we offer our trade customers a product supply and disposal cycle.

In the field of medical imaging we launch the first specialist developer for mammography applications, Roentoroll RA, which delivers improved capabilities for cancer screening. With Roentoroll AC, the first hydroquinone and glutaraldehyde-free X-ray developer for all types of film, together with innovations in the field of dental technology, Tetenal reinforces its position as a specialist in “X-ray photography” applications.

In 1995 Tetenal's quality management system is certified to the DIN ISO 9001 standard.

From data carrier to paper print

In 1996 Tetenal was one of the first companies to enter the inkjet printing product market with its Spectra Jet brand. A large number of product innovations in the field of professional image creation follow. Today, Tetenal is among a small group of technology leaders in the global professional inkjet printing market.

In 2000 Tetenal makes a breakthrough, with its G-Chem technology, which allows the company to manufacture process chemicals in solid form, i.e. as granulates, tablets or pearls, with outstanding performance parameters. Products are developed for the minilab sector which lead the way in terms of user-friendliness, ecology, efficiency and processing speed.

In 2003 Tetenal further expands its product portfolio in the Large Format Printing (LFP) field. The company develops customised ICC profiles for its multi award-winning Spectra Jet media. Tetenal incorporates the high quality EPSON LFP printers into its range and offers a comprehensive service package for setting up and smoothly integrating the printers into the workflow processes. Associated training courses are also offered.

In 2006 Tetenal assumes responsibility from Konica Minolta Photo Imaging Europe GmbH for all deliveries of consumables and the complete service package for minilabs in Germany and other European countries.

Furthermore, Tetenal expands its cooperation with Kodak by supplying Kodak Express Digital Solutions partners. Tetenal assumes responsibility for the distribution of Kodak Aerial Imaging Films and chemicals in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

At Photokina 2006, Tetenal introduces the Tetenal ecojet tablet system. To-date, this remains a globally unique, patent-protected system for Konica Minolta digital labs.

Photos at their most beautiful

In 2011 Tetenal commenced production of high quality, hand-made photo albums, with its SILVERBOOK brand. These albums are sold via Tetenal’s own online shop, DIE ALBENMANUFAKTUR.

In 2016 Tetenal assumes responsibility for the distribution of Kodak Negative Colour photographic papers in Europe and endeavours to uphold collaboration and maintain the previous sales structures.

In 2017 Tetenal opens up a new market for all inkjet service providers: direct printing on metal plates for large format inkjet printers.
